Cargoes on the Lea

Make sure your volume is on: "Coal and wood"

Show transcript

The industry was such that coal was the main usage going through, and also there was tenders coming out the docks mainly that was offloaded from docks and piers along the Thames side and they were then distributed up to the Lea and also down to the Channelsea, which is round the corner. The general run round. You would see many days around about 30 to 50 barges coming down there waiting to go out of the river which is empty, and obviously you have a lot outside waiting to come in, in the same way. And they did their turn as the tide went up and down.

[Wood was carried on the barges] because along the Lee there used to be a lot of furniture making, and in that industry mainly around Hackney and around Old Ford and around that way there was quite a lot...the end of Carpenters Road of course was another one that took in quite a lot.

In this recording from the Eastside Community Heritage, a man recalls what the barges that passed through the tidal lock were carrying.
