The paint factory

Make sure your volume is on: "Reg and his first job"

Show transcript

Before you left school you had an interview. Someone came around to the school and you went in one by one and they would look at your term report and see how you had been doing this, that and the other, and then ask you what you'd like to do. The first thing I said, "I'd like to work in a laboratory." He said, "Oh, alright. Your marks are not too bad...but they're not brilliant" - probably why I never got into one where it was all acids and things - but he said, "I think I can find something of interest to you."

I think it was the first job I applied for. I went and saw the Chief Chemist, and he said, "Well, we're always looking out for people who want to be in a laboratory," he said, "some people do just because they have a BAC in Chemistry." I went and had an interview with the Chief Chemist and the Personnel Manager, and they offered me a job.

And I remember the first month salary - twelve pounds! I can remember sitting on the 699 bus from Stratford going home, I got my pay packet out and one, two, three, four...twelve pounds! Ooooh!

And then of course there was the old canal out the back - I don't know how much old paint went into there - it shouldn't have gone but it did! Some of it was accident, but I'm not so sure about all of it.

In this audio clip from the Eastside Community Heritage group, a man called Reg talks about how he came to work in one of the paint factories by the canal.

Reg's dog was keen to join in the interview - you can hear heavy panting at some points on the audio track when the dog got too close to the microphone!
