This was one of the main routes for people to get to the London Stadium during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. There is a real science to crowd movements, making sure that there are no bottlenecks or sharp turns, which can make people bunch up uncomfortably.

As part of the legacy plan, this area was always going to be redeveloped, with hundreds of new homes being built between Mandevillle Place and the Lee Navigation. This is part of a wider plan to build 6,800 new houses on the Park.

Because the area was earmarked for redevelopment, the landscapers used quite robust plants for the path borders rather than grass. These cost much less to plant and maintain, so money wouldn’t be wasted on something that was only temporary.

For the next stop, go to the grassy edge of Mandeville Place between the two arms of the Diamond Bridge, and look down.
