You are standing at the edge of Mandeville Place, between two of the arms of Diamond Bridge where it crosses over the lock. In front of you there is a steep slope down to the lock side, planted with pine trees and coarse grass. At the bottom is the lock, on a short channel of water which links the two rivers. The lock has two gates in the water, and two gantries above with cables that swing the gates up and over, a bit like a garage door.

There are wide wooden steps leading down from this ‘bridge’ level to the ‘lock’ level. There is a similar set of steps on the other side. The steps have wide wooden platforms where you can sit if the weather is fine and enjoy the environment.

Where the slope is steep, the ground is stabilized by wire cages filled with crushed concrete. Underneath the arms of the bridges, these ‘gabions’ are stacked up to provide a solid foundation.
